22BE Club Ziegelstr. 23 Hip Hop, Reggae/Dub On any given Friday or Saturday night, the line to get into
2BE (sometimes a half-block long) is a clear sign that
this place is legit. Once you get through security, there
is a solid, energetic buzz inside, which has two sizable
dance floors with big name DJs blasting what’s usually
hip hop and reggae. Also, importantly, it’s easy
to escape the busy dance floors to a more mellow place,
whether it be in the hallway or outside in the courtyard
- not always possible in other clubs. Ziegelstr. 23, Mitte.

440seconds Potsdamer Str. 58 (Cnr Schöneberger Ufer) Other Ride the 40-second lift from Potsdamer Straße up to the aptly named and very popular, 40seconds. With large windows, a great balcony and a lounge set-up with creamy couches, the views of Potsdamer Platz and the young and beautiful guests are superb and, by now, well-known to Berliners. Less known however is 40seconds' other project, the exclusive restaurant, 40seatings. Open for dinner Thursday to Saturday (when the club does the majority of its business), 40seatings offers a first-class dining experience with a great view. Reservations required. After dinner, the dance floor turns on the house music, with the HouseJam parties (every third Saturday of the month) being particularly popular. Club door charge is up to €10, guests must be 21 years and over, kick-off from 11pm and the dresscode is smart. Potsdamer Str. 58, Schöneberg, S1 S2 U2 Potsdamer Platz, Map 2.
AA-Trane International Jazz Club Bleibtreustraße 1 Jazz, Other With the intimate stage and the low-lighting, you know
you've moved into a special venue when you sit down
in A-Trane. An international guest list of jazz musicians
(sometimes sitting in the audience too!) is proof of the
fact that this is one of the most famous jazz clubs in
Berlin. Attentive table service and management also
ensure an enjoyable evening.

Acud Veteranen Str. 21 Hip Hop, Other This ramshackle art center is complete with a gallery, theatre, cinema, bar,
and club. The remodeled downstairs bar offers live music every night, show

Veteranen Str. 21, Mitte. U8 Rosenthaler Platz. Map 1.
Aufsturz Oranienburger Str. 67 Rock, Jazz, Other Unlike many bars in Mitte, Aufsturz doesn’t look sleek,
retro, or outrageous. It is what it is – a Berliner
bar that serves well-priced German food, 100 types of beer,
and 40 types of whisky. Live music downstairs. It’s
a large place too, with plenty of outside seating in the
warm months on colorful Oranienburger Str. Oranienburger

bb-flat Rosenthaler Str. 13 Jazz This jazz bar, close to Hackescher Markt, offers live jazz
and acoustic music every night. Contemporary interior,
designed to look and sound fresh. Free acoustic session
on Wednesdays. Tango on Sundays. Rosenthaler Str. 13, Mitte.

CCafé Moskau Karl-Marx-Allee 34 Café Moskau is a huge club – both in its sheer
size and popularity. Two bars, two dance floors. The expansive
downstairs regularly hosts big name DJs and is a great place
to groove. From the outside the building is a genuine piece
of Soviet architecture planted in the middle of East Berlin.
The inspiring mural at the entrance makes you want to collectivize
your farm, drink vodka, and call everyone comrade. Entry €8-10.
Karl-Marx-Allee 34, Mitte. U5 brown Schillingstr. Map 3.
Columbiahalle / ColumbiaClub Columbiadamm 13-21 and 9-11 Columbiahalle is a large music- and events-venue for bigger,
more popular bands. ColumbiaClub is a smaller – but
still sizable – venue right next door. Both venues
regularly host big name bands touring through Berlin. Columbiadamm
13-21 and 9-11, Kreuzberg, next to Tempelhof Airport. U6
Platz der Luftbrucke.
FFestsaal Kreuzberg Skalitzer Str. 130 Experimental, Electronic, Rock Normally a turkish wedding hall, but also leads a double-life as a venue for electro, rock or techno gigs - typical Berlin! The venue is authentic and makes an effort to showcase the best in experimental and independent music, whatever the style. Entry is normally less than €10. For gig listings send an email to info@festsaal-kreuzberg.de or keep your eyes peeled for bill posters around town.

Fritzclub (in Postbahnhof) Straße der Pariser Kommune (opposite S-Bahn Ostbahnhof) Hip Hop, Electronic, Reggae/Dub Located in an old postal railway station (hence the name), this is the `abandoned warehouse party in Berlin' that you don't want to miss. Big international acts play pretty regularly during the week, so it's worth keeping an eye on who's coming to visit. If you just want to go along unplanned, the weekend parties heave with the young and beautiful. The music selection is mixed - from electro across to rock - and with a door charge of €6 (cheaper on Fridays for students) you can't really go wrong. From 11pm on Saturday night, Fritzclub expands to three DJs on three floors to give you plenty of room to shake your bonbons. Should the music not be to your taste, then a separate bar area allows you to speak to that pretty girl with the funky fringe.

GGeburtstagsklub Am Friedrichshain 33 Reggae/Dub Designer club always reinventing itself. Often hired out
for private birthday parties, thus the name. Am Friedrichshain

HH2O Dircksenstr./Ecke-Karl-Liebknecht-Str. Hip Hop, RnB, Reggae/Dub If you are in search of a bustling club that plays hip hop,
R&B, reggae-raga, then you’ve found it. H20 club
has an industrial, underground feel to it, with two dance
floors and a large, comfortable lounge area. Two bars,
so getting a drink is easy. A great location: right next
to Alexanderplatz, beneath the S-Bahn tracks; it is also
a five minute walk from Hackescher Markt. Dircksenstr./Ecke-Karl-Liebknecht-Str.

IIcon Cantianstr.15 Hip Hop, Reggae/Dub One of Berlin’s finest drum & bass clubs, with
an emphasis on quality international and local DJs. In a
basement location representative of Berlin’s underground
scene, this club is divided into several bars, lounges, and
dance areas. Cantianstr.15, Prenzlauer Berg. U2 Eberswalder
Stra?e. Map 4.
JJunction Bar Gneisenaustr. 18 Hip Hop, Reggae/Dub, Rock Popular live music venue in Kreuzberg. A DJ follows great
live music every night. If you arrive early or want to
retire somewhere quieter mid-show, head upstairs to the
café. Showtime 9 pm Sun-Thurs, 10 pm Fri-Sat, though
bands usually start later. Gneisenaustr. 18, Kreuzberg.
U7 Gneisenaustra?e. Map 3.
KKaffee Burger Torstr. 60 Punk/Ska, Reggae/Dub, Other Classy, authentic, and oh-so-Berlin retro-bar cum club. Home
to the legendary “Russian Disco,” a night of
Russian punk and ska music (every other Saturday night).
Burger also regularly hosts live music as well as DJs playing
everything from folk to reggae to country to indie. (Sunday
is a great night for music – The Rolling Stones,
Bob Marley, Pixies, White Stripes, etc.) The place was
established by Vladimir Kaminer, a Russian immigrant to
Berlin, now a famous author who still finds time to DJ.
The staff is really nice. Subject to crowds. Torstr. 60,
Mitte. U2 Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Map 1, 4.
Kalkscheune Johannisstraße 2 (Cnr Kalkscheune Str.) Experimental, Other More of a cultural center than a constantly humming
club, Kalkscheune caters to the more discerning Berlin
music-scenester. Bands and performing artists here are
particularly varied, performing almost every night of the
week (Tix start from €6 for the parties, slightly more for
the performances). A building with a great history - built
in 1831 as an industrial factory, the top level was taken
over by the Stasi in GDR times and used to spy on
visiting international delegates who were always forced
to stay in a hotel across the road!!
Johannisstraße 2, Mitte, U6 Oranienburger Tor, Map 1.
Kosmos Karl Marx Allee 131a Other One of the most intriguing club locations in Berlin, Kosmos used
to be the flagship cinema complex of East Germany and a
favourite stomping ground of the communist icon, Erich
Honecker. These days, it's less of a cinema and more of a party
venue, offering mainstream dance hits to all ages. Parties in the
fantastic main hall on Thursdays and Saturdays are very popular
- on the third Thursday of every month, try to catch the
'Traumhafte Party', where the wish of one lucky partygoer is
fulfilled every hour (you write your wish on a card as you go in).
In accordance with the striking soviet architecture, Kosmos also
offers authentic Russian cuisine, such as pelmini, wareniki and
bliny (between €4.50-€10). Breakfast and daily specials are also
offered (from €3). Open 10am til late.

Kulturbrauerei Knaackstr. 97 Rock, Reggae/Dub, Jazz Once home to the Berliner Schultheiss Brewery, the Kulturbrauerei
(Culture Brewery) has been converted into a cultural center
with various venues for parties and movies and food. If
you’re in the mood for a cigar, a nice glass of scotch,
and a game of billiards, go to Pool & Cigars. Two medium
sized music venues, often host to rock or reggae or jazz
bands: Palais and Maschinenhaus. Then there is SODA, a
large nightclub with a restaurant. There is even an industrial
design museum. Kulturbrauerei is a large complex and worth
a walk through. Knaackstr. 97, Prenzlauer Berg. U2 Eberswalder
Stra?e. Map 4.
LLovelite Simplonstraße 38-40 Other Lovelite demands for its musical acts to be "anything funky". If it's leather clad girl-rock or rare funk festivals that you're after - or anything in between - then find out what's happening here, it's well worth your while. The stage and sound are superb. What started as an illegal apartment / bar project to bring artists together has now turned into one of Berlin's most progressive venues. Note: massive stadium-techno nights are not common, due to its suburban location. €4-6 Door charge. Simplonstraße 38-40, Friedrichshain, S3 S5 S7 S75 Warschauer Straße, Map 3.
MMatrix Warschauer Platz 18 Rock, Reggae/Dub, RnB This large, bustling nightclub boasts a booming sound system
and a young crowd. Three dance floors. Music differs from
night to night. Sometimes it’s rock night, in which
case each dance floor features a particular genre of rock,
like 60s stuff or metal. Other times it’s just good
dance music, everything from reggae-ragga to R&B. The
industrial stone and brick arches of the train tracks above
compliment the otherwise colorful atmosphere. There are
often great cocktail specials, especially for women. Check
out the computerized drink system – and the go-go
dancers. Warschauer Platz 18, Friedrichshain. S3, S7, S5,
S9, U1 Warschauer Stra?e. Map 3.
MUDD Club Große Hamburger Str. 17 Rock, Punk/Ska, Techno/Dance This nightclub was created by the same man who launched the
famous MUDD Club in New York City, which hosted “punk” bands
like John Cale and the Talking Heads back in the late 1970s
and early 80s – an important era for music. The Berlin
MUDD of today offers a huge variety of music: surprisingly
well known indie rock bands, local punk bands, dance music,
and “Balkan beats” DJ parties (recommended).
Intimate but comfortable, with two dance floors, this place
feels like you’ve walked into a hip underground club.
To reach MUDD, walk through the courtyard set back from
the road. Große Hamburger Str. 17, Mitte. S5, S7,
S75, S9 Hackescher Markt. Map 1.
nnbi Schönhauser Allee 36 (in Kulturbrauerei, entrance Sredkistraße) Electronic, Rock A project dating back over 10 years, the 'new berlin initiative' (nbi) was set up by two Berliners keen to make fun of all that was 'new and funky in east Berlin'. Ironically, now it leads the way in the Berlin music scene, booking a broad range of bands and deejays (international and local) playing music from rock to electro. The crowd is either musically well-informed 20 to 30somethings, or tourists looking for their cool Prenzlauerberg experience. So if you make up the second group, play it cool, or go on the weekend and just dance your socks off. €2-€5. Schönhauser Allee 36 (in Kulturbrauerei, entrance Sredkistraße), Prenzlauer Berg, U2 Eberswalder Straße, Map 4.
OOxymoron Hackesche Höfe, Rosenthaler Str. 40-41 RnB, Techno/Dance It's a tricky concept - part restaurant, part cocktail bar, part club - but Oxymoron's happy punters are clear proof that it can be done. Set in the old Jewish quarter of Berlin, the Hackesche Höfe, lunch at Oxymoron is a salon affair with an extensive menu for cuisine buffs. In the evenings the place changes it's stripes - the no-dress-code 'Boogie Night' on Fridays (€10 door) seriously pumps up the party.
Hackesche Höfe, Rosenthaler Str. 40-41 S5 S7 S75 S9 Hackescher Markt, Map 1
PPavillion Friedenstr. 101 Other Located in Volkspark Friedrichshain, this venue boasts a 150-person dance floor, beer garden, lounge, and BBQ terrace. It's a café by day and club by night and is best enjoyed in the summer months. The corner of Friedenstr. and Platz der Vereinten Nationen, Friedrichshain. U5 Strausberger Platz. Map 4.
Pavillon In Volkspark Friedrichshain, Cnr Friedenstr./Lichtenberger Str. Electronic, Reggae/Dub In the tranquil surrounds of Friedrichshain's 'people's park' lies a charming little building with a thatched roof called Pavillon. In the summertime it runs as an outdoor restaurant with international cuisine and a shady beergarden. Inside on a friday or saturday night however, things are not quite so quaint. A dimly lit bar, a unique dancefloor and plenty of chillout areas await. This is also the home of two of Berlin's most successful non-electro dance nights - 'soul explosion' and 'tunes' (dancehall/reggae). Attracts 20-something Berlin regulars looking to boogie. Door approx €6. In Volkspark Friedrichshain, Cnr Friedenstr./Lichtenberger Str., U5 Strausberger Platz, Map 1.
PrivatClub Pücklerstr. 34 Rock, Other Cozy night club beneath a roomy café. Local live bands
often play here. Also hosts regular, off-beat parties. Pücklerstr.
34, Kreuzberg. U1 Görlitzer Bahnhof. Map 3.
QQuasimodo Kantstr. 12a Jazz Laid-back, smoky jazz bar – it claims to be the oldest
in Berlin. Located beneath the Delphi Cinema, an art deco
dance hall from the 1920s converted into a cinema. There
is always live music, and sometimes an open stage jam session.
Kantstr. 12a, Charlottenburg. S5, S7, S75, S9, U2, U9 Zoologischer
Garten. Map 2.
RRaumklang Libauer Str. 1 (corner Kopernikusstraße.) Electronic, Techno/Dance If you want a seriously underground clubbing experience in Berlin you have to get to Raumklang - late. The bar looks like it has just moved in for the night, but the speaker system here has to be permanent – a more penetrating sound experience cannot be had anywhere. Musically, Raumklang specialises in electronic music for a largely Berlin audience. A comfy chill-out area around the bar allows you to restock on required fluids. Open Thursday to Saturday for over 21s only – gay friendly. Libauer Str. 1 (corner Kopernikusstraße.), Friedrichshain, S3, S5, S7, S75, S9 Warschauer Straße, Map 3
Roter Salon Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Electronic, Rock, Other Roter Salon, essentially a 1920s ballroom with a red disco
ball dangling from the ceiling, features a variety of
musical
themes depending upon the night, often indie
rock, ska,
or electronic music. This club cum live-music
venue is
part of the Volksbühne Theatre on Rosa-
Luxemburg-Platz.
Follow the red neon glow. Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz,
Mitte.
U2 Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Map 1.
SSage Club Köpenicker Str. 78 Rock, RnB, Hip Hop Sage is one of the contenders for most popular clubs in Berlin,
drawing big crowds to its three dance floors, top DJs,
and unique party themes, which range from rock every Thursday
night to, for instance, “Blood” night. They
even have charity party nights, where proceeds benefit
to the Sage Hospital in Senegal in West Africa. (Now that’s
cool.) This place is very Berlin, so don’t act like
a typical tourist at the door, and don’t show up
drunk. Köpenicker Str. 78, Mitte. U8 Heinrich-Heine-Str.
The entrance is by the steps to the station.
SO36 Oranienstr.190 Techno/Dance, Hip Hop, Punk/Ska One of Berlin’s most famous clubs – host to live
music, techno parties, and regular gay events. The name comes
from the old post code for the area and is associated with
the alternative scenes that thrive there. Oranienstr.190,
Kreuzberg. U1, U8 dark blue Kottbusser Tor. Map 3.
Sophienclub Sophienstr. 6 Rock, Other Sophienclub is cozy and often packed with young people. A
comfortable lounge area offers an escape from the two dance
floors, one upstairs and one downstairs, each blaring a
different style of music depending upon the night. Sophienstr.
6, Mitte. S5, S7, S75, S9 Hackescher Markt. Map 1.
Sternradio Alexanderplatz 5 Techno/Dance If you’ve come to Berlin searching for the innovative
techno city of the 90s, this is where you’ll find it:
this compact nightclub is designed to create the best atmosphere
for enthusiasts. It’s hidden around the side of a great
looking 1960s communist tower block over the road from Alexanderplatz.
Alexanderplatz 5, Mitte. S5, S7, S75, S9, U2, U5, U8 Alexanderplatz.

TThe Yorckschlösschen Yorckstr. 15 Jazz There is one house law, posted boldly on the wall, which
every guest at this jazz club must abide by: “Be
nice or leave.” Management certainly complies, for
the Yorckschlösschen offers free live music (good
quality live music) most nights of the week. This place
has a great vibe. Musicians mingle with visitors. Jazz
and blues memorabilia (including photos of artists past
and present) plaster the walls. Hang out at the friendly
bar, enjoy a delicious meal, shoot some pool, and listen
to great music. The Yorckschlösschen is our favorite
Kreuzberg jazz club! Yorckstr. 15, Kreuzberg. U6, U7 Mehringdamm.

WWatergate Falckensteinstr. 49 Electronic One of the hottest clubs in Berlin right now, with one of
the best locations – overlooking the River Spree.
Two levels: the main floor is large and where the main
attractions perform; the waterfloor is more a lounge with
a smaller dance floor and a gorgeous view of the river.
The music varies, but generally a lot of electronica spun
by top Berlin and internationally recognized DJs. Falckensteinstr.
49, Kreuzberg. U1 Schlesisches Tor. The entrance is up
a small ramp on your right just before you walk north over
the bridge (Oberbaumbrücke). Map 3. |
